Colorado River Coalition Calls for $2B Federal Drought Response Funding
US · Published Jun 4, 2026
A coalition of over 70 organizations, including water agencies, agricultural groups, conservation organizations, and Tribal entities, is urging Congress to allocate at least $2 billion in federal funding to address severe drought conditions in the Colorado River Basin.
The region, which provides water to 35 million people, is facing critical challenges such as declining reservoir levels, aging infrastructure, and risks to hydropower generation.

Why It's Important?

The ongoing drought in the Colorado River Basin poses significant risks to municipal water supplies, agricultural operations, hydropower generation, and ecosystem health. Existing infrastructure, designed for historical hydrologic conditions, is no longer adequate to meet current challenges. Without immediate federal investment, the region could face worsening water shortages, economic disruptions, and environmental degradation. The coalition emphasizes that delaying action will only increase the risks and costs associated with managing the basin's water resources.
